Olympic Course Marathons.
1. Saturday 14th July 2012 (Close to the London Olympics dates!). The Stockholm
Marathon organisers are to hold a marathon to celebrate the 100th anniversary
of the 1912 Olympic marathon on the original course.

2. 7th August 20??. The Club are planning to organise a marathon over the 1948
London Olympics marathon course. Similar to the 1908 format, minimal support,
narrative course instructions provided. We have walked most of the course and
it is runnable though not very interesting. Starting and finishing at Wembley
Stadium the route heads North to Stanmore, then on footpaths alongside the A40
and A1 dual carriageways, up to Radlett and back.
There are no nice round number anniversary years coming up and we do not wish
to wait for 2048.
There are also issues with
the start/finish at Wembley. Possibilities are:
Sunday 7th August 2011. Could be Charity Shield at Wembley.
Tuesday 7th August 2012. During 2012 Olympics (midweek between womens and mens
marathons?). Wembley could be being used for Olympic football.
Wednesday 7th August 2013 etc.
3. The Club are planning to organise a marathon over the 2012 London
Olympics marathon course (men's marathon on 12th August?). Same format as 1908
and 1948 runs. The actual course has not yet been decided. The course in the
bid document proposed a start on Tower Bridge, three loops taking in the
sights of central London then out to the Olympic stadium.
The date for a rerun is up for debate. 100 days after (Tue 20th Nov 2012), 1
year after (Mon 12th Aug 2013) ??
Friday 26th October 2012
100th Anniversary of the opening of the Woolwich Foot Tunnel.
If we can get permission we will hold a marathon in the tunnel.
The tunnel is 504 metres long so, depending on the location of turnround
points, there will be 42 laps plus.
There could be a problem with cycle barriers.
The tunnel is being refurbished, estimated completion March 2011, then we'll
have another look
